                               アーク検出装置(AFDD)
  電気設備による火災は,しばしば充電導体間の絶縁不良又は緩んだ端子接続によって生じる,並列アー
ク又は直列アークによるアーク故障によって引き起こされる。直列アーク故障の続く間,そこには対地間
の漏れ電流は流れないため,漏電遮断器はこの故障を検出する能力はない。さらに,直列アーク故障のイ
ンピーダンスは,負荷電流を低減させるため,電流値は配線用遮断器又はヒューズの遮断動作のしきい(閾)
値には至らない。線導体と中性線との間の並列アークの場合,その電流は,設備及びアーク自体のインピ
ーダンスによって抑制されるため,結果として生じる故障電流は,過電流保護器の動作電流より低くなる。
  アーク検出装置は,配線からの電流(並列アーク故障として考える。)又は被保護回路中の負荷(直列ア
ーク故障として考える。)のいずれかによって制限され,アークが続くことによって故障状態を検出可能で
ある。
  交流回路では,IEC 62606に適合したアーク検出装置(AFDD)を使用することで,電気設備及び電気器
具から延焼する大規模な火災から生じる人,家畜及び財産への危険性の低減に貢献可能である。
  次の三つの機器がIEC 62606に規定されている。
− AFDユニット及び開路手段で構成し,かつ,適切な短絡保護器と直列に接続する単一装置としての
    AFDD。なお,この短絡保護器は,JIS C 8211,JIS C 8222又はIEC 60269規格群の一つ以上に適合す
    るとして製造業者によって表明されたものである。
− JIS C 8211,JIS C 8221,JIS C 8222又はIEC 62423の一つ以上に適合した保護器に統合したAFDユ
    ニットで構成する単一装置としてのAFDD
− その場所で組み立てることを意図した,AFDユニット及び保護装置で構成するAFDD
  米国では,AFDDと類似のアーク故障配線用遮断器(AFCI)は,NFPA 70の210.12による要求として,
分岐回路中のアーク故障の影響に対する特別な保護手段を提供するために使用されている。
  注記 アーク故障による火災の発火は,一般的に次の一つ又は幾つかから起きる。
        − 故障電流(並列アーク)に至る充電導体間の絶縁劣化
        − 負荷電流状態での断線又は損傷(断面の減少)した電線(直列アーク)
        − 高抵抗になる端子接続部
