Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.

Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council.

International Standard ISO 1750 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 81, Common names for pesticides and other agrochemicals.

This International Standard cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation R 1750-1970 and its Addenda 1 to 5. It also incorporates draft Addenda 6, 7 and 8, which were circulated to the member bodies in December 1972.

This International Standard has been approved by the member bodies of the following countries:

0 Introduction

This International Standard lists the common names approved by Technical Committee ISO/TC81, Common names for pesticides and other agrochemicals, for certain pest control chemicals and plant growth regulators of international importance. It supersedes the 1970 edition of ISO Recommendation R 1750 and incorporates its Addenda 1 to 5 and draft Addenda 6, 7 and 8, which have been approved for publication.

The standard is presented as a combined English/French text, the common names being listed in alphabetical order in English with cross-references where the French spelling differs significantly from that in English.

The chemical name in conformity with the English rules of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is given first in each case, followed first by the IUPAC name in French and then the name preferred by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), where that differs from the IUPAC name. The Chemical Abstracts name is not necessarily derived according to the system currently used; for this reason, a molecular formula index has also been included.

The use of each compound is given according to the following classification:

Those countries in which the common names are not acceptable are listed but it should be noted that the absence of a particular country from these lists may not be construed as acceptance of the name in that country. The countries are designated according to the ISO alpha-2 code provided in ISO 3166, Codes for the representation of names of countries. The list of these codes for the countries concerned is as follows:

It is proposed in due course to issue further lists of internationally approved common names and these will be published as addenda to this International Standard. In some cases, widely used names are not available for international use at the present time, because they are protected by trade marks in certain countries.
