Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council.
International Standard ISO 2257 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 95, Office machines. The first edition (ISO 2257-1972) had been approved by the member bodies of the following countries:

0 Introduction
Ribbons of many different widths are available for use on office machines and on printing machines used for information processing. This variety forces up costs, creates stock difficulties, and may cause confusion.
To reduce the number of widths, this International Standard has selected nine of them which cover the majority of requirements.
1 Scope and field of application
This International Standard specifies the principal widths to be retained for fabric printing ribbons of 19 mm (0.75 in) width and less, on spools, intended for office machines and printing machines used for information processing.
In case of two-coloured fabric printing ribbons, this International Standard also specifies the widths of the colour bands.
Ribbons of more than 19 mm width are the subject of International Standard ISO 3866.
