Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described in the ISO/IEC Directives, 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, 2 (see www.iso.org/directives ).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 23, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry, Subcommittee SC 14, Operator controls, operator symbols and other displays, operator manuals.

This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition (ISO 3600:2015), which has been technically revised.

The main changes are as follows:

• added content for digital presentation of operator’s manuals;
• revised 3.2 from normal operation and service to normal operation;
• added the following terms:
  • 3.4 display;
  • 3.5 maintenance;
  • 3.6 service;
  • 3.7 operator’s manual;
  • 3.8 repair;
  • 3.9 replacement part;

• revised 4.1.2.1 to printed format;

• added 4.1.2.2 for electronic format;

• added Clause 5 to address the reference to Annex A.

Introduction

In the preparation of this document, consideration has been given to the fact that manuals are expected to be available for operators. Operators need to have a manual, giving guidance for the correct use and maintenance of the machine and its equipment and attachments. It is expected that such a manual be clear and simple to understand, that it contains warnings for foreseeable hazards as well as definitions of terms, and that the units, symbols and pictorials used conform with the relevant International Standards.

1 Scope

This document specifies the content and gives guidance on the format of operator’s manuals for tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, and powered lawn and garden equipment. It is intended to assist manufacturers of the machinery in the drafting and presentation of these manuals.

Manuals intended for use by a service technician are not within the scope of this document.

2 Normative references

For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
