Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

International Standard ISO 3796 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology, Subcommittee SC 8, Structures.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 3796:1976).
The following amendments have been made to the first edition.
- a) A reference to ISO 6042 has been inserted in Table 1.
- b) Figure 1 now shows the shape of the clear opening depending on the design of the door frame.
- c) Sizes for corner radii have been added.
- d) Tolerances have been added.
- e) A recommendation to prefer clear openings with rounded corners (100 mm radius) has been added.
1 Scope
This International Standard lays down standardized dimensions of clear openings for all types of external single-leaf doors, on board ships, for which coamings are required.
These dimensions shall be used as nominal sizes for these doors of ships.
