Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 4063 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee SC 7, Representation and terms.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 4063:1998), which has been technically revised. The nomenclature has been updated and terms that have become obsolete or redundant have been removed from the body of the standard and retained for the convenience of the user in Annex A.

This corrected version of ISO 4063 incorporates the following corrections:
- Clause 3, reference number 987 (duplication of 918) deleted, reference numbers 983–986 changed to 973–976 and reference number 977 added, and the German term for 832 corrected;
- the examples given in 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 modified;
- Belgian synonyms for some French terms added, and these and such terms already present identified by “BE”;
- “designations” substituted for “abbreviations and acronyms” in Annex B;
- the introductory paragraph to Annex B, mention of parenthesized reference numbers deleted, as there are none in this fourth edition;
- the tables of Annex B generally modified and corrected.
1 Scope
This International Standard establishes a nomenclature for welding and allied processes, with each process identified by a reference number.
This International Standard covers the main groups of processes (one digit), groups (two digits) and sub-groups (three digits). The reference number for any process has a maximum of three digits. This system is intended as an aid in computerization, drawings, the drafting of working papers, welding procedure specifications, etc.
NOTE In addition to terms in English and French, two of the three official ISO languages, this International Standard gives the equivalent terms in German; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.
