Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, 3.

The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

ISO 7287 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee SC 8, Equipment for gas welding, cutting and allied processes.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 7287:1992), which has been technically revised.

Introduction

A graphical symbol is defined as an optically perceptible figure produced by means of writing, drawing, printing or other techniques. It is used to transmit a message and represents an object or concept in a clearly understandable manner, independent of any language. The principles for the uniform presentation and publication of graphical symbols are laid down in ISO 3461-1.

Because of increasing international interest in the design and use of graphical symbols, this International Standard presents a certain number of graphical symbols in the field of thermal cutting equipment.

In order to avoid misunderstanding, special care should be taken when using symbols whose meanings are dependent on position (see also ISO 81714-1).

1 Scope

This International Standard covers graphical symbols which are to be placed on thermal cutting equipment (e.g. indicators and operator controls) in order to instruct the persons handling the equipment as to its use and operation.
