Introduction
This document provides standardized terminology for the heated tobacco product (HTP) category and sub-categories as well as the product attributes for each sub-category to aide with the categorization of HTPs.
With the emerging development and commercialization of HTPs in the worldwide marketplace, there is an urgent need for standardization of terminology and definitions to define the types of products that fit within this category. The purpose of standardized terminology is to provide consensus on definitions that describe the HTP category and sub-categories for the purpose of consistency across the scientific community. This standardization ensures that scientific study results apply to the appropriate product types and can be compared across multiple studies.
The purpose of this document is to provide a categorization of the different available designs. These definitions are important to clearly distinguish HTPs from other tobacco products.
NOTE This document is a reference document for ISO standards on tobacco heating systems (e.g. ISO 5501). Regulation and standardisation are independent from each other, and standardisation does not pre-empt regulation.
