Introduction
The terms and their descriptions contained in this International Standard have mainly been derived from International and European Standards on refractory materials and represent internationally recognized terms applied in a specific sense to refractories. The descriptions of the terms are what is generally understood within the refractories industry and are not absolute definitions.
In order to reflect current expert technical opinion, the sources used have been the most up to date documents either published or under development. Many of these have been European documents issued by Technical Committee 187 of the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN/TC 187), most of which have been based on, or derived from, existing ISO Standards.
Descriptions sourced from standards are worded as closely as possible to that appearing in the standards within the editorial requirements of ISO 10241 [13] .
However, the descriptions have been compared with the following documents, and in a few cases modified, to ensure completeness:
BS 3446-1 [29] ; BS 3446-2 [30] ; BS 3446-3 [31] ; ASTM C71-00 [27] ; Dodd and Murfin [32].
Further modifications have been made where necessary to remove conflict between descriptions. Where significant modifications have been made, a note appears after the term to the effect that the description has been adapted from a particular standard.
In addition, terms have been included which appear in standards and are themselves specific to refractories, or which assist in the understanding of refractory standards. In these cases, the descriptions have been compiled from the essential features from the above mentioned documents.
